The Temple College baseball team hosted the Angelina Roadrunners in a Sunday doubleheader at the Danny Scott Sports Complex.
In a day that started with 22-degree weather and 45 degrees at game time, the teams christened the DSSC baseball field with the first game on the artificial turf.
Another two-game set went down to the wire that saw neither lead by more than two runs Angelina won game one in eight innings, 6-5. Game two that went to nine innings, Kash Millar's one-out double to right field to score Kanyon Millar and Landon Miller in the bottom of the ninth gave the Leopards a 7-6 win.
Temple took a 1-0 lead in the opener, as Kade Davis' sacrifice fly scored Yarel Delgado.
Angelina took their first lead of the day in the top of the third, as Will McKinzie's RBI triple and Cole Standley's RBI single put the Roadrunners on top, 2-1.
The Leopards plated the equalizer in the bottom of the inning, as Davis' triple to the right-field corner scored Delgado.
The Roadrunners re-took the lead on a squeeze bunt by Jackson Todd in the top of the fourth.
Temple countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Elias Leon-Padilla's RBI single and Wade Stallones' RBI infield single put the Leopards on top, 5-3.
Angelina responded with three runs in the top of the fifth, with a two-run homer by Jon Gonzales and solo homer by Stefano Ramos to put the Roadrunner in the lead, 6-5.
The Leopards tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Davis led off the inning with a triple. With two outs and a 1-1 count, Kanyon Millar's RBI single up the middle scored Davis to tie the game at 6-6 to force the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Connor Ficarra's two-run single down the right field line gave the Roadrunners an 8-6 advantage.
The Leopards could not score the equalizer in the bottom of the eighth, as they dropped game one.
Angelina collected ten hits in the game, led by Standley and Ficarra with two hits each.
Aaron Martinez picked up the win in relief.
Temple collected nine hits in the loss, led by Davis, who had two triple and two RBI. Chase Fricke and Kanyon Millar also had two hits apiece.
The Leopards scored in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap. Davis' one-out double set up Peanut Brazzle's infield RBI single.
Angelina picked up the tying run in the top of the second inning. Gavin Harmse singled in Ramos.
Temple pulled ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the third, as Trajan Godbee singled home Delgado with two outs.
The Roadrunners tied the game when Ficarra's sacrifice scored Harmse, who reached base on an error in the top of the fifth.
The Leopards tied the score again in the bottom of the inning, as Cameron Bartz reached on an error to start the inning, and scored on Kanyon Millar's sacrifice fly with one out.
Angelina scored in the top of the sixth inning, as Ramos scored on a wild pitch and Harmse's two-run single gave the Roadrunners a 5-3 lead.
Temple scored twice in the seventh inning. Davis started the inning with a double to the right-field corner. Brazzle moved Davis to third with a flyout to right field. Davis scored on a sacrifice fly by Fricke. Down to their final out, Kanyon Millar crushed a fastball over the right-centerfield fence to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings.
The Roadrunners took a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth inning when Gonzales' sacrifice fly scored McKinzie.
With their backs against the wall in the bottom of the ninth, the Leopards rose up to the challenge. Fricke singled and was run for by Landon Miller. Kanyon Millar walked and Brody Cole moved his teammate up a base on a sacrifice bunt. On a 2-2 count and seventh pitch of the at-bat, Kash Millar hit a liner into right field to score Kanyon Millar and Miller to beat the Roadrunners.
Temple clubbed 11 hits in the second game, lead by Davis' 3-of-3 performance. Eight Leopards collected one hit each, with the Millar brothers each having collected two RBI.
Davis started on the hill for Temple, allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, struck out four, and walked two.
Zabien Urteaga picked up the win in relief, having pitched three innings, allowed one run on one hit, and walked one.
Harmse led Angelina with three of their seven hits and collected three RBI.
Gavin Brawner took the loss in relief for Angelina, who threw seven pitchers in game two.
Temple will travel to Galveston College for a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
