The Temple College men's basketball team wrapped up their three-game homestand on Saturday afternoon as they hosted Dallas College – North Lake at Kirby Johnson Court.
Having trailed 72-62 with 5:30 to go, the Leopards used a 12-0 run in 1:46 to take a two-point lead and complimented the run with big foul shots down the stretch as Temple held off North Lake, 83-79.
The teams will meet again next Saturday at the South Plains Classic.
The first half featured back-and-forth lead changes with the Blazers emerging from the first half with a 40-38 lead.
Temple led 52-46 with 15:24 in the second half when the Blazers used the next 9:54 to post a 26-10 stretch to grab a 10-point lead with 5:30 to play.
North Lake (4-2) got big shots from Josh Telfort, Esjorn Reidhav, and Tayshaun Goston during a 12-0 run to give the Leopards a 74-72 lead with 3:44 to go.
From that point, free throws became a premium on both sides. The Leopards, who shot just 6-of-14 in the opening 20 minutes, used a six straight free throws down the stretch by Jaymes Brown-Peterson and another by Jonty Kells to separate the Leopards.
The Blazers had a couple of opportunities to tie or take the lead late, but the suffocating Leopard defense got timely stops to lock up the win.
Temple shot 22-of-39 from the line, which included 16-of-25 in the second half.
Telfort led all scorers with 20 points. Roy Gardner added 12 points and Brown-Peterson added eight.
The Blazers were 11-of-11 from the free throw line in the first half and finished 21-of-26.
Romiel Carter led the Blazers with 15 points, with Santana Spivey and Jordan Edwards having added 11 points each.
Temple (4-2) will travel to Dallas on Wednesday to take on Dallas College – Mountain View.
