Men’s basketball starts strong, falls to No. 3 Midland College, 108-75

The Temple College men's basketball faced off against No. 3 Midland College in the first game of the Mark Adams Classic Thursday afternoon on Harold Davis Court at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum in Big Spring.

The Chaparrals broke open the game with a 25-6 run to end the first half as Midland sprinted past the Leopards, 108-75.

Midland (12-0) scored the first four points of the contest before Harry Bates got the Leopards on the board with a three-point shot with 17:39 to go in the first half.

Jonty Kells gave Temple a 14-12 lead with a jumper with 14:54 to play in the opening half.

Temple (6-5) opened up a five-point lead at the 13:06 mark before the Chaparrals went on a 18-5 run that forced the Leopards to take a timeout with down eight, 34-26, with 8:22 to go in the half.

The Leopards battled back out of the timeout with a 6-0 before Midland found a different gear, cut the run off with a 9-0 run of their own.

The Chaparrals finished the half with a 25-6 run over the final 6:56 to take a 59-38 lead into the halftime break.

Midland started the second half on an 12-0 run before Jaymes Brown-Peterson broke the streak with a three-pointers with 16:11 to go. The Chaparrals pushed their lead out to 38 with 12:56 to play, 82-44.

Temple pulled to within 25 points, 96-71, with 6:43 to play. However, the Chaparrals continued the shoot well, and ended up with a 33-point win.

Midland shot 65.3% (49-of-75) from the floor, including 4-of-13 from beyond the arc, and 6-of-7 from the foul line.

Yeison Liberato led all scorers with 31 points, which included 15-of-18 from the floor. Darius Carr and Solomon Ominu each had 14 points for Midland.

The Leopards shot 42.2% (27-of-64) from the floor, which included 5-of-17 from behind the three-point arc, and hit 16-of-25 free-throws.

Joel Brown led the Leopards with 14 points, Brown-Peterson added 12, and Roy Gardner chipped in nine.

The Leopards return to action Friday afternoon at 3 pm, as they take on Western Texas College. TC will wrap up their stay in Big Spring Saturday afternoon as they take on No. 14 Howard College.
