TC men’s basketball storms back from double-digit deficit to down Ranger, 90-79

The Temple College men's basketball team has not faced too many situations where comebacks have been in their cards this season.

On Saturday at Ranger College, the Leopards made an absolute statement to the conference they are ready for the field in the second half of the season.

Having trailed by 17 points with 34 seconds left in the first half, Ovie Agbigbe's three-pointer with six seconds left in the first half bridged a 29-0 run into the second half that ate up 5:09 to help lead the Leopards to a 90-79 win over the Rangers.

The win puts Temple in third place, one-half game behind Collin County Community College and a game-and-a-half ahead of Southwestern Christian College and Ranger.

Ranger led the game 7-0 3:12 into the contest before Agbigbe hit two free-throws with 16:33 left in the half.

The Rangers went on stretches of 8-0 and 26-16 to open a 17-point lead, 43-26, with 34 seconds remaining in the opening half.

Temple (14-10 overall, 5-3 NTJCAC) moved the ball around patiently in their offensive zone before Agbigbe lined up and drained a three-pointer to make the score 43-29 at the half.

The Leopards came out of the locker room steaming and went up tempo to force the play in their direction, which stunned the Rangers. Within 2:07, Temple scored the first 13 points and was back to with one point, 43-42.

After Jaymes Brown-Peterson's three-pointer that gave the Leopards their first lead with 16:54 remaining, Temple continued on with ten consecutive points. The Leopards led 55-43 with 15:13 left in the game.

Temple's biggest lead of the game, 21 points, came with 7:40 to play as Harry Bates' field goal gave the Leopards a 78-57 advantage.

Ranger closed the gap to 11 points at the conclusion with a game-closing 20-10 run.

Temple hit eight three-pointers and converted 17-of-24 from the free-throw line.

Telfort led Temple with 22 points. Bates added 16, Gardner chipped in 13, and Agbigbe and Jason Ward each contributed ten points.

Ranger (9-14 overall, 3-4 NTJCAC) hit two three-pointers and 12-of-16 at the free-throw line.

Cam Brown led the Rangers with 24 points and Gavin Headings added 14.

The Leopards will host Collin County Community College on Wednesday at Kirby Johnson Court.
