The Temple College Leopards women's basketball went into Wednesday evening's contest against Weatherford College with an opportunity to leapfrog the Coyotes and gain a share of fourth place.
However, the pesky Coyotes had other ideas, having plenty of opportunities in the second half as they erased TC's 15-point lead with a 37-15 stretch over the final 15 minutes to stun the Leopards, 70-63.
Temple and Weatherford stayed close to one another in the first half. The Leopards led 15-13 at the end of the opening quarter, and by two points at halftime, 28-26.
The Leopards started the second half on a 20-7 run and had a 48-33 advantage with 4:30 left in the third quarter.
Weatherford finished the third quarter on a 10-0 run, as they snipped Temple's lead to five point heading into the fourth quarter, 48-43.
The Coyotes extended the run to 19-0 as they led the game 52-48 with nine minutes remaining in regulation.
Temple could only work the margin back to five points with five minutes to go, but the Coyotes held off the Leopards attack on both offense and defense.
Weatherford's balanced scoring saw four players in double-figures and a pair of double-doubles. Jacque Giron led the Coyotes with 15 points, Pearson McVay logged 14 points and 14 rebounds, Naomi Wilson had 14 points and six rebounds, and Neso Anisiobi scored 13 points and 14 rebounds.
The Coyotes were 27-of-34 from the free-throw line, which included 11-of-13 in the third quarter and 11-of-15 in the fourth quarter.
Mychal White and Janiya Lewis each scored 15 points for the Leopards, with Imani McCray having added 11.
Amid Weatherford's comeback in the second half, Temple did not earn a trip to the free-throw line in the second half until 6:59 to go in the fourth quarter. On the night, the Leopards were called for 24 fouls to 13 for the Coyotes.
Temple will travel to Terrell on Saturday to take on the Southwestern Christian College Rams at 2 pm.
