TC women’s basketball bounces back to beat Western Texas College, 60-51

The Temple College women's basketball began their stay at the 2025 WTC Classic in Snyder on Thursday evening as they took on the Western Texas College Westerners at Yvonne Richardson Court.

Down 12 points in the first quarter, the Leopards gradually whittled the margin to two points by halftime, got a go-ahead steal and basket by Ranyiah Hunt before the start of the fourth quarter, and put together a 19-9 final stanza to outlast the Westerners, 60-51.

The Westerners started the game on a 12-3 run over the first 4:30, and extended it to an 18-6 lead with 3:43 to play in opening quarter.

Hunt scored 13 of her game-high 24 points in the first quarter to pull the Leopards closer, as WTC lead at the end of the opening ten minutes, 22-14.

Hunt, Gabby Edo, Ke'Myreul Wheaton, Daija Mitchell, and Kania Prichett scored points in the second period, as they outscored WTC, 15-7. The Westerners had a slim two-point lead at the halftime break, 31-29.

The margin bounced between two and four points through the first 8:32 of the third quarter. Mitchell hit a three-pointer to bring the Leopards to within a point with 1:28 to go in the period and Hunt stole a pass in the WTC offensive zone, bolted down the court and scored to give Temple their first lead of the game, 43-42, with 1:14 to go in the period.

Down 42-41 going into the fourth, Temple ratcheted up the defense, got the go-ahead basket on a drive by Wheaton with 8:30 to play, and did not give up the lead.

The Leopards were 10-of-14 from the free-throw line down the stretch, as they lead by nine points twice in the quarter, including the final point with by Hunt with 27.2 seconds to go.

Garcia and Wheaton each had ten points, and Edo and Mitchell each had 13 rebounds, as the Leopards outrebounded the Westerners, 49-38.

Temple will take on Howard College Friday morning at 11 am at WTC Coliseum.
