Following a come-from-behind win over Western Texas College on Thursday evening, the Temple College women's basketball team took on Howard College on Friday morning at the WTC Classic at Yvonne Richardson Court in Snyder.
The Leopards erased a 19-0 first quarter run with plenty of good defense, timely shooting, and patience, as the Leopards got a stop in the final three seconds to ground the Hawks, 79-78.
Temple (6-1) led 8-7 when. Crystal Aragon posted 11 points in Howard's 19-0 run that covered 4:06 to give the Hawks a 26-8 lead with 2:33 to play in the opening quarter.
Korina Garcia snapped the stretch with two field goals and a free throw. The Leopards trailed after ten minutes, 26-14.
Temple fought in the second quarter to not let the score get away. Howard outscored the Leopards in the second period, 21-20, and led Temple at the half, 47-34. Hunt picked up seven points in the quarter.
The Leopards fortunes began to change in the third quarter, as they took advantage of second chance opportunities. Trailing by 13, Temple chipped away at the margin, taking the deficit from 13 with 8:58 to go in the period to two with 58 seconds to go. At the end of the third, Temple trailed Howard, 66-63. Makayla Ellison had 17 of Howard's 19 points in the period.
Antronea Jackson hit two free-throws early in the fourth, and Ke'Myreul Wheaton's field goal gave Temple a 67-66 lead with 8:10 left in regulation, and Ranyiah Hunt hit a three-pointer moments later.
The lead went back and forth down the stretch before Kailyn Berry's field goal with 41.8 seconds left gave the Hawks a 78-77 lead.
Kania Prichett's jumper in the lane with 30 seconds left put Temple in the lead for good.
Howard had the final opportunity to win the game, but was unable to get a clean shot at the basket and Prichett retrieved the ball to run out the clock.
Temple shot 40.3% from the field, 32% from behind the arc, and 13-of-16 from the free-throw line.
Garcia had 18 points, Hunt added 17, and Prichett had 14 off the bench for Temple.
Howard shot 41.5% from the field, 39.1% from beyond the arc, and 15-of-18 from the charity stripe.
Ellison led all scorers with 21 points, and Aragon and Abrianna Lawrence each scored 14 for the Hawks.
The Leopards return to Kirby Johnson Court Tuesday at 5 pm as they play UMHB JV.
