The Temple College women's basketball team hosted No. 22 Tyler Junior College on Friday evening at Kirby Johnson Court in a rematch within the confines of the Temple College Classic.
In an insane game that went two overtimes, the Apaches outscored the Leopards in the second overtime to down TC, 67-59.
Temple (8-2) jumped out to an early 10-2 advantage in the first quarter and led 10-6 at the end of the opening ten minutes.
Tyler (7-2) outscored the Leopards in the second quarter, 12-6, as the Apaches led at the half, 18-16.
The lead continued to go back and forth throughout the second half, as the Leopards outscored the Apaches 13-10 in the third period as Temple took a 29-28 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Tyler and Temple continued to trade the lead back and forth in the final minutes of regulation. With Tyler having outscored Temple 13-12 in the final ten minutes, the teams went to the first overtime period tied at 41-41.
In a recurring theme from regulation, the teams went back and forth before Chyna Nixon went to the free-throw line with 5.1 seconds to go. Nixon missed the front end of the two-shot set. On the second shot, the ball bounced off the rim to the right. Nixon jetted around the right side of the lane, claimed the offensive rebound and banked the ball through the hoop with 4.4 seconds to go to give Temple a 54-52 lead.
Off the inbound pass, Monica Bottley sprinted down the right side of the lane, banked the ball through the hoop with 0.4 to play. Temple was unable to get a shot off before the horn, as the teams headed to the second overtime tied at 54-54.
The Leopards got into foul trouble in the second overtime, with two players fouling out. The Apaches outscored the Leopards in the second extra session, 13-5 to claim the grueling double overtime win.
Tyler converted 22-of-34 from the free-throw line, which included 10-of-16 through the overtime periods. The Apaches, who averaged 82.8 points per contest, were held to 41 through the first four periods, and 67 through 50 minutes.
Coming into the game, Temple had allowed just 50.1 points per game and did their part defensively by holding Tyler to nine points under the season mark.
Having shot 39.1% from beyond the arc, the Apaches were held to just two three-pointers, both made by Kennedi Johnson.
Johnson led all scorers with 25 points, all in the second half, which included 21 points in the fourth quarter and both overtime sessions.
Temple converted 17-of-28 from the free-throw line but went 2-6 in overtime. Gabby Edo led the Leopards with 18 points, which included 10-of-13 from the charity stripe. Nixon added 11 points for Temple.
In the opening game of the tournament, Odessa College (7-8) edged Angelina College (3-6), 68-63, to end their tough six-game losing streak.
The Temple College Classic will conclude Saturday with a pair of games. Tyler will take on Odessa at noon, followed by Temple against Angelina at 2 pm.
