TC, Blinn battle to OT before Buccaneers snare win, 69-65

 

The Temple College women's basketball team traveled to Brenham on Saturday, seeking for a non-conference split against the Blinn College Buccaneers at Kruse Center.

In the meeting on Dec. 13 at Kirby Johnson Court, the Buccaneers took advantage of the Leopards' cold shooting in the first half to upend TC by 25.

For the second time in TC's last six games, an extra session was necessary. Blinn outlasted the Leopards in overtime 6-2 to emerge with a 69-65 win over the Leopards.

Temple (10-4) took the opening lead on a three-pointer by Korina Garcia 37 seconds into the matchup. Chyna Nixon chipped in a basket before the Buccaneers went on an 8-4 run to take a 10-9 lead.

Garcia added a three-point play and Gabby Edo added a basket to give Temple a 14-10 advantage at the end of the opening ten minutes.

Temple opened up an eight-point lead with 7:13 to go in the first half before Blinn closed the final stretch with a 19-9 run to take a 29-28 lead into the locker room.

The teams traded a handful of leads in the third period with both teams holding three-point leads. Temple led at the conclusion of the third quarter, 48-47.

The Leopards' five-point lead was erased on an 11-2 run by Blinn, as the Buccaneers led by five, 62-57, with 41.3 seconds to play in regulation.

Garcia ripped the twine with a three-pointer with 31.9 to play, and the Leopards forced a backcourt turnover with 29.9 to go.

Kamaria Ford sank the front end of two shots and missed the second, which the Leopards retrieved and TC head coach Amber Taylor quickly called timeout with 16.3 to play. Kyla Clark drove down the side of the lane, drained the leaner, drew a foul from Mariah Ford, and sank the free-throw with 7.4 to go to force overtime.

Both teams played ferocious defense in the extra five minutes. Ford hit the back end of a two-shot foul trip to give Blinn (10-6) the initial lead.

Hunt's field goal with four minutes to go gave TC a one-point lead.

However, three TC fouls resulted in three trips to the line for Blinn. They converted 3-of-6 shots to take a 67-65 lead. Mariah Houston's field goal with 32 seconds to play iced the game for the Buccaneers.

Temple hit eight three-pointers and converted 12-of-16 free-throws in the game.

Hunt led the Leopards with 15 points, Garcia added 14, and Jackson scored 12.

Blinn hit five three-pointers and converted 23-of-33 free-throws.

Taylor Spencer led all scorers with 21 points for the Buccaneers.

The Leopards return to action on Wednesday, as they begin North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference play against Ranger College.
