TC Volleyball snaps seven-game skid with win over SWCC

TC Volleyball snaps seven-game skid with win over SWCC

Two teams that were in dire need of a North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference win on Wednesday evening were the Temple College Leopards and the Southwestern Christian College Rams.

With the home fans behind them, it was the Leopards' night.

Temple snapped a six-game conference slide and seven-game skid overall with a 3-0 win over the Rams at Kirby Johnson Court.

The Rams captured the initial point of the match. However, the Leopards answered in dominating fashion with an 11-3 run, with Yasmine Traore, Lana Wright, Kharma Brown, and Grace Schneider having logged kills set up by Karlee Williamson, Abbie Soileau, and Hanna Ward.

When it looked as if the Rams were poised to come back, the second wave of Leopards came to the rescue, as Sarah Rodriguez and Riley Mendiola fed off assists from Williamson and Soileau. Temple took the opening game by 11 points.

Southwestern jumped out to a 4-1 start in game two before a cannonading blast by Traore and soft tap kill by Wright turned away the threat. The Leopards put together a mid-set, 9-1 run to turn the Rams away again by another 11-point margin.

SWCC led 2-0 in game three, and the game was tied at 3-3 when the Leopards broke away from the Rams. TC logged a 13-3 stretch and a match-ending 6-0 run to clinch the 13-point win.

Traore finished the night with 12 kills, Brown ended with nine, and Schneider registered seven. Soileau notched 21 assists, and Williamson added 15 helpers. Ward had 15 digs, six aces, and four assists.

Temple improved to 7-13 overall and 1-6 in NTJCAC play. SWCC dropped to 0-19 overall and 0-7 in the conference.

The Leopards will take on No. 3 Weatherford College Saturday at the Betty Graber Gymnasium at 1pm in Weatherford. The Coyotes won at Vernon College on Wednesday, 3-0. Scores were 25-10, 25-18, 25-17.
