The Leopards Athletic Report (Week of Sept. 22-28)

The Leopards Athletic Report (Week of Sept. 22-28)

In week that saw plenty of action around its five-sport landscape, the Temple College Leopards were busy on the court here on campus and around the state.

Volleyball continued to play toward the end of the first half of conference play, baseball played a JUCO showcase doubleheader, softball play in a Baylor Softball showcase, and both basketball teams are in preparation for this week's preseason jamborees.

With plenty of action to cover, here is this week's Leopards Athletic Report:

TC Volleyball picks up first win of conference season, falls to No. 3 Weatherford

The Temple College Volleyball continued its North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference schedule this past week.

In search of their first conference win, the Leopards hosted Southwestern Christian College on Wednesday at Kirby Johnson Court.

The Leopards played an aggressive contest where they registered 44 kills, 34 digs, and 16 service aces in route to a convincing sweep. The scores of the match were 25-14, 25-14, and 25-12.

The Rams captured the initial point of the match. However, the Leopards answered in dominating fashion with an 11-3 run, with Yasmine Traore, Lana Wright, Kharma Brown, and Grace Schneider having logged kills set up by Karlee Williamson, Abbie Soileau, and Hanna Ward.

Sarah Rodriguez and Riley Mendiola came off the bench and were key point scorers while the regulars grabbed a rest, as the Leopards continued to pound away at the Rams over the course of the match to execute the sweep.

Traore finished the night with 12 kills, Brown ended with nine, and Schneider registered seven. Soileau notched 21 assists, and Williamson added 15 helpers. Ward had 15 digs, six aces, and four assists.

With their first win conference in pocket, the Leopards headed northwest for a big test against NTJCAC-leading Weatherford College, NJCAA Division I's No. 3 team in the national poll.

Temple battled throughout the match, but could not put the brakes on Weatherford's top hitters Weronika Urbanska, Glorybell Puente, and Beline Thibault, as Victoria Sanchez picked up 17 assists in the Coyotes' 3-0 win.

The scores of the match were 25-12, 25-16, and 25-14.

The Leopards played mightily, having collected 31 kills, 21 assists, and 17 digs. However, 17 attack errors, 16 receive errors, and 10 service errors hamstrung Temple's ability to keep the match closer.

Traore ended the afternoon with eight kills, and Wright added six. Soileau picked up 18 assists, and Schneider and Soileau both had three digs.

Where do the Leopards sit

The Leopards sit at 7-14 overall, and 1-7 in NTJCAC play.
