TC softball shuts out Kilgore College in doubleheader sweep

TC softball shuts out Kilgore College in doubleheader sweep

The Temple College softball team took the field for the second consecutive as the Leopards hosted the Kilgore College Rangers Tuesday afternoon at the Danny Scott Sports Complex.

The Leopards posted back-to-back shutouts of the Rangers in impressive fashion, as they outlasted Kilgore 4-0 and 8-0 in five innings.

Temple has won four straight games to start the season, having outscored opponents 31-2.

Izzy Garcia got the start in the circle for Temple and kept the Rangers off the base paths over the first 2 1/3 innings. Garcia issued a walk to Lauren Minatrea with one out in the third inning but stranded her at first base after having induced a groundout and strikeout.

Prior to the walk, Temple had retired 23 straight batters going back to the opening game against Clarendon College on Monday.

Temple posted two runs in the bottom of the third. Angie DeLeon's RBI single scored Jasmine Benavidez and Reese Cottrell's sacrifice fly play Kaiyah Ratu.

Samantha Salas singled with one out in the fourth inning for Kilgore's lone hit of the game.

Benavidez's sacrifice fly scored Brooklyn Walton with one out in the bottom of the fourth, and Marli Kennedy scored on a throwing error induced on her second stolen base of the sixth inning to round out the scoring for the Temple.

Cottrell and Walton each contributed two hits in the Leopards' 10-hit attack.

Garcia pitched a complete game for the win. She allowed one run, one hit, one walk, and hurled seven strikeouts.

In the second game, Kennedy's sacrifice fly scored Ryley Litchfield and KyLeigh Cambiano's single scored Walton to give Temple a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

The Leopards opened the floodgates in the fourth inning. Cottrell and Benavidez drew bases-loaded walks, Cambiano scored on a fielder's choice, Litchfield had a two-run single, and Kennedy's RBI single capped a six-run inning to put the Leopards in run-rule territory and closed out the game moments later.

Cambiano crushed three hits, and Walton, Litchfield, and Lexi Dudeczka each had two hits.

Kat Kram picked up the win in the circle, having surrendered four hits and struck out five in 4 1/3 innings. Dalanee Ekster closed out the game with 2/3 innings in relief.

The Leopards will travel to Odessa for a four-game series this weekend. On Saturday, Temple will play Luna Community College at 10 am and Odessa College at 12 pm. On Sunday, the Leopards take on the Wranglers at 10 am and Luna at 12 pm.
