The Temple College Leopards softball team looked to start their eight-game homestand in winning fashion, as they hosted the Blinn College Buccaneers on a warm and windy Tuesday afternoon at the Danny Scott Sports Complex.
Temple collected 12 hits and scored in four of their at-bats in game one, as they downed Blinn in five innings, 13-5.
The Buccaneers and Leopards played a tight second game until a solo homer by Cadence Wiese in the top of the sixth gave Blinn the lead as they staved off two rally attempts by TC in the bottom of the sixth and seventh respective to win game two, 3-2.
In the opener, the Leopards hopped on the board in the bottom of the first as Myah Starks' ground out scored Lexi Dudeczka and KyLeigh Cambiano's fly ball was dropped in right field. To score Reese Cottrell to give Temple a 2-0 lead.
Dani Lopez's home run to center field in the top of the second cut Temple's advantage to 2-1.
Dudeczka's single scored Marli Kennedy and Madi Durnell to stretch Temple's lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the second. Jasmine Benavidez tripled to center field scored Brooklyn Walton and Dudeczka, and Starks' sacrifice bunt scored Benavidez to give the Leopards a 7-1 heading into the third inning.
Wiese homered in the top of the third to pull the Buccaneers to within five runs in the top of the third.
Temple exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Cottrell singled home Dudeczka, Maycee Griffin scored on a passed ball, Madi Durnell singled home Myah Starks and Benavidez, Kennedy doubled home Angie DeLeon, and Walton's sacrifice fly scored Durnell to give the Leopards a 13-2 advantage and an opportunity for the run-rule win.
Wiese drilled her second home of the game to left field which also scored Halle Scheel, and Annie Beckendorf added a solo shot to pull the Buccaneers back to within eight in the top of the fifth. However, Blinn was unable to push the game out of run-rule, as the Leopards closed out the game with an eight-run margin.
Dudeczka had three hits, and Cottrell, Benavidez, Durnell, and Kennedy all had two hits each in Temple's 12-hit attack. Dudeczka, Benavidez, Starks, and Durnell each had two runs batted in.
Izzy Garcia pitched 4 1/3 innings for the win, as she allowed four runs on eight hits, struck five, and walked one. Cottrell pitched 2/3 inning of relief, allowed a run on a hit.
Beckendorf and Skylar Flanagan led Blinn with two hits each, as the Buccaneers collected nine hits. Wiese had two homers and three of runs batted in.
Madisyn Bracknell took the loss in the circle, as she pitched three innings plus, allowed ten runs (nine earned) on ten hits. Kaci Dudensing pitched an inning of relief, allowed three runs on two hits, hit a batter, and allowed a walk.
In the second game, Brianna Moreno's two-run double score Lopez and Beckendorf to give Blinn a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
Benavidez reached base on an error in the bottom of the third the scored Walton to put the Leopards on the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the fifth, Cambiano's grounder resulted in a fielder's choice that scored Dudeczka to tie the game at 2-2.
On the third pitch of Blinn's half of the sixth inning, Wiese crushed a pitch over the centerfield wall for her third homer of the twin-bill and gave Blinn a 3-2 lead.
Durnell and Walton sandwiched walks around a ground out to start the bottom of the sixth. However, a fielder's choice and flyout stranded Leopards at second and third.
After the Buccaneers were retired in order in the top of the seventh, the Leopards had a final chance to tie.
With one out, Starks and Cambiano singled. Griffin came to run for Starks and was tagged ou heading to third on DeLeon's grounder. Durnell grounded out to second to end the game.
Moreno had two of Blinn's four hits, and two RBI.
Brynn Gallamore picked up the complete game winning, allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits, walked four, and struck out one.
Benavidez had two of the Leopards' seven hits.
Dalanee Ekster got the start, allowed two runs on two hits, struck one, and walked one in two innings. Cottrell pitched five innings of relief, allowed one run on two hits, struck out two and walked one.
Temple (12-4) will host No. 6 Odessa College in a doubleheader on Friday, slated for 11 am and 1 pm at the Danny Scott Sports Complex
