TC Softball starts conference play with sweep over NCTC

The No. 10 Temple College Leopards softball team began North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference play on Thursday afternoon at the Danny Scott Sports Complex as they hosted North Central Texas College.

Kat Kram and Izzy Garcia combined to shut out the Lions' offense over 13 innings, and Garcia fired a no-hitter in the second game as the Leopards swept NCTC, 3-0 and 80 (six innings).

The two wins extended Temple's win streak to ten games, with six of the games by way of shutout. The Leopards have outscored teams in the streak, 80-11.

Kram retired the Lions in order to set the Leopards up for success in the bottom of the first.

Lexi Dudeczka singled to start the inning and stole second base with one out. Reese Cottrell singled between the first and second basemen into right field to score Dudeczka.

Kram ran into a jam in the top of the second when she issued three straight walks. She induced a line out, strikeout, and ground out to escape unscathed.

Jasmine Benavidez's two-out walk came to hurt the Lions, as Cottrell's double scored Benavidez to double Temple's lead.

The Leopards scored a run in the fifth when Brooklyn Walton crossed the plate via a passed ball.

Temple left the bases loaded in the sixth, but shut the Lions down in the seventh for the opening-game win.

Cottrell went 2-of-3 with two RBI, as part of a six-hit output in the opener.

Kram pitched seven innings for the complete game shutout. She allowed two hits, in the fifth and seventh, struck out six, and walked five.

Rylee Adams took the loss for NCTC. She pitched six innings, allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, struck out four, and walked three.

Temple started game two with one-out hits by Benavidez and Cottrell. A double play ended the first-inning threat.

Garcia retired four straight before issuing a walk to Bailey Short. She utilized a fielder's choice and ground out to escape damage.

The Leopards hit the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Ryley Litchfield and Garcia produced back-to-back singles with one out. After Litchfield stole base and with Maycee Griffin on to run for Garcia, the Leopards executed a perfect double steal. Maycee swiped second base and Litchfield scored on the ensuing throw to put Temple up 1-0.

With one out in the third inning, Cottrell singled. On a 1-1 offering, Kayiah Ratu blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence to increase the Leopards' advantage to 3-0. After a walk to Angie DeLeon and a two-out hit-by-pitch from Garcia, Kennedy tripled home KyLeigh Cambiano, who ran for DeLeon, and Garcia. Walton's suicide squeeze bunt scored Kennedy to give TC a 6-0 lead.

Kennedy's second triple of the game with two outs in the fifth set up a second suicide squeeze bunt by Walton that scored Kennedy.

The Leopards ended the game in the sixth. Autumn Simmons' leadoff, pinch-hit single brought on Benavidez to the base paths via re-entry. Benavidez stole second and scored on Cottrell's lined single to right field.

Cottrell went 4-of-4 with an RBI and run scored. Marli Kennedy went 3-of-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Walton and Ratu had two RBI each.

Garcia faced one batter over the minimum in the sixth-inning no-hitter. She struck out eight and walked one.

Abriana Coy took the loss for the Lions. She allowed six runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out one in three innings. Abby Wolf pitched two innings plus two batters in the sixth, allowed two runs on four hits, walked one and struck out one.

In the doubleheader, the Leopards collected 19 hits, with Cottrell having collected six hits.

The series between the Leopards and Lions will continue Saturday with a doubleheader in Gainesville.
