The No. 4 Temple College Softball team traveled just west of the Metroplex on Wednesday as they took on No. 20 Weatherford College in the continuation of North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference action.
The Leopards dominated play early and weathered through an early rally in the second game to sweep the Coyotes.
Scores of the twin-bill were 13-0 (five innings) and 7-3.
Temple (44-6, 24-2 NTJCAC) wasted no time getting to Weatherford early. With one out in the first, Jasmine Benavidez singled and Reese Cottrell walked. With two outs, Izzy Garcia singled home Benavidez and Ryley Litchfield doubled home Cottrell and Garcia to put Temple up 3-0.
Garcia retired the side in order in the first, having given the Leopards momentum heading into the second. Cottrell's triple set up Kaiyah Ratu's single to increase Temple's lead to four.
After retiring the Coyotes in order in the bottom of the second, the Leopards scored nine runs in the top of the third. Angie DeLeon reached on an error that scored Litchfield. With one out, Brooklyn Walton's single scored DeLeon. Following a bunt single by Lexi Dudeczka and fielder's choice that landed Benavidez on base, Cottrell singled home Walton, Ratu's sacrifice fly scored Dudeczka, Garcia's double scored Benavidez, Ratu's sacrifice fly plated Dudeczka, Litchfield's single scored Cottrell, Garcia scored on an error, DeLeon's double scored Litchfield, and Dudeczka reached on an error that scored DeLeon to give Temple a 13-0 lead.
The lone Coyote hit of the contest was a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth by Jackie Devine.
Dalanee Ekster came one with one out in the bottom of the fifth and struck out the two batters she faced to close out the opener.
Litchfield and Cottrell each had three hits in Temple's 13-hit attack. Litchfield drove in three runs, and Ratu and Garcia had two RBI each.
Garcia picked up the win in the circle, as she pitched 4 1/3 innings of one-hit ball and struck out five.
Ratu began the scoring in the second game with a solo homer in the second inning.
Cassidy Victorino hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second to give the Coyotes their first lead of the twin-bill.
Unfazed, the Leopards re-took the lead for good in the top of the third. Benavidez's sacrifice fly scored Dudeczka and Cottrell belted a two-run homer to give Temple a 4-3 lead.
DeLeon's sacrifice bunt scored Maycee Griffin in the top of the fourth and Ratu's second homer of the game scored Cottrell in the top of the fifth to give Temple a four-run lead.
Temple got seven hits in the game, lead by Ratu's two homers and three RBI. Cottrell drove in two runs to help support Kat Kram's win in the circle.
Kram logged the complete game, having dealt seven innings, allowed three runs on six hits, struck out seven and walked two.
Victorino led the way for Weatherford, with two hits and three RBI.
The Leopards host Weatherford on Saturday in doubleheader action at the Danny Scott Sports Complex.
