Day two of the Southwest B District Tournament at the Danny Scott Sports Complex started with an exciting winner's backet semifinal between No. 4 Temple College and No. 9 Grayson College.
The Leopards rallied from three runs down, cut the lead to one in the fifth inning, and used Jasmine Benavidez's bases-clearing double to sail past the Vikings, 6-4, and clinch a spot in Friday's tournament final.
Temple (52-6) reached the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second, as KyLeigh Cambiano's sacrifice bunt attempt was thrown away into right field to score Ryley Litchfield.
Jaclyn Draeger gave Grayson their first lead in the top of the third, as she knocked a two-run homer over the centerfield fence
The Vikings added to their lead in the top of the fifth, as Willa Ford's single scored Draeger and Matthews to put Grayson up 4-1.
Temple bounced back in the bottom of the inning as Reese Cottrell's two-run single cut Grayson's lead to one.
In the bottom of the sixth, Temple loaded the bases with two outs. On a 1-1 offering, Benavidez drilled a screaming shot that hugged the third base line and went into the left field corner to score Brooklyn Walton, Cambiano, and Lexi Dudeczka to give Temple a 6-4 lead.
The Leopards retired the Vikings in order to both the win the game and clinch the first spot in the championship game.
Dudeczka has two of Temple's six hits. While Benavidez drove in three runs, and Cottrell drove in two.
Garcia went 4 2/3 innings, allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits, walked two, hit a batter and struck out two. Cottrell picked up the win in relief, as she dealt 2 1/3 innings and struck out one.
Carolyn Koval picked up the loss for Grayson, having pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowed six runs (one earned) on six hits, walked four and struck out three. Riley Mays struck out the lone batter she faced.
In the first elimination game of the day, Frank Phillips College took on Midland College.
The Lady Plainsmen scored once in the contest, but Midland bounced back to run-rule Frank Phillips in five innings, 10-1, and ended their season at 23-35.
Jesirae Compean's double to left field scored Mia Telles to give Frank Phillips a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Chaparrals answered with a five-run bottom of the first.
Alexys Cornejo's RBI single, Jozanna Montes' RBI double, Hannah Flores' two-run single, and Maycee Wilson's RBI single to put Midland up, 5-1.
Emma Davis added a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth, Brianna Flores contributed an RBI double and Cornejo added a walk-off, two-run single to end the game.
Brianna Flores, Davis, Cornejo, and Noriega had two hits each in Midland's 12-hit attack and added eight walks as a team.
Marie Rondeau picked up the win, allowed one run on three hits, walked three, and struck out two.
Marissa Gonzales allowed five unearned runs on five hits and a walk in the first inning. Lauren Hernandez pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowed five runs on seven hits, and struck out five.
Midland moved on to the second elimination game against Grayson.
The Vikings fought from two runs down with two runs in the fourth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh to defeat the Chaparrals, 6-3.
The loss ended Midland's tournament stay at 43-10.
Mia Kreuger landed the Vikings on the board first with an RBI single that scored Ford.
With two on in the bottom of the second, Brianna Flores hit a line drive homer over the right field fence to give the Chaparrals a 3-1 lead.
Grayson evened the score in the top of the fourth when Ford's two-run homer cleared the centerfield fence.
The Vikings took the lead in the top of the sixth for good. Carolyn Koval's single scored Ford, and Aniyah Pequeno's RBI single scored Sydney Mann.
Ford added a sacrifice fly in the seventh to help give Grayson the three-run margin, and the win to help clinch the rematch against Temple College on Friday.
Ford had two hits and three RBI to lead Grayson. Pequeno, Matthews, and Larsen each had two hits.
Mays pitched three innings, allowed three unearned runs on four hits, struck out two and walked one. Natalie Moreaux picked up the win in relief, having held Midland hitless, while having struck out seven and walked two.
